What is Magazines Online?

Magazines Online is a free service accompanying your Philip Allan Magazine subscription that gives you access to a digital copy of your magazine. Also available when you register online are additional resources - including examiner commentaries and revision materials - pertinent to the articles.



How do I start using Magazines Online?

Click on the Register button at http://magazinesonline.philipallan.co.uk and select whether you are an Institution or Home subscriber or an Associated subscriber.

You will be taken to a simple registration form -


Institution or Home Subscriber
You will need to fill in a few details and search for your Institution / Home address by the name of your Institution / House number and postcode.

The e-mail address that you enter will become your account username, this must be entered in valid e-mail format. You will also need to designate a password for your account.

Your Institutional / Home subscription is linked to your Customer Number which will begin CU-. You can find your Customer Number on the address slip delivered with your magazine and your invoice (it will be the 'Delivery to CU-' number on an invoice).

Once you click Register your account is set up and ready to go! You will recieve an e-mail detailing your log in information - simply click the Institution or Home Subscriber button on the left hand side of the screen to log in.

Associated Subscriber
You will need to fill in a few details and search for your Institution by your Institution's name and postcode.

The e-mail address that you enter will become your account username, this must be entered in valid e-mail format. You will also need to designate a password for your account.

The content for Associated subscriptions needs to be added using the access code and key word which are printed on the back of your magazine
. You can do this at the time of registration OR you can add this in later after your account has been created.


Once you click Register your account is set up and ready to go! You will recieve an e-mail detailing your log in information - simply click the Associated Subscriber button on the left hand side of the screen to log in.

What type of subscriber am I?

You are an Institution or Home Subscriber if

    • You are a teacher or librarian at an Institution who has ordered a full price Institutional subscription to any of the Review Magazines and recieve them directly from us AND/OR have ordered an Institutional subscription to any of the Online Archives.
    • You are an individual not attached to an Institution who has ordered a Home subscription to any of the Review Magazines which is delivered to your home address AND/OR have ordered a Home subscription to any of the Online Archives.

You are an Associated Subscriber if
    • You are a student or teacher who has purchased an Associated subscription (for a reduced-price) from your Institution.
    • You are a student who is being given access to the online archives by their school or college.

How do I access my magazine and resources?

Institution or Home Subscriber
Your magazine subscriptions are linked to the Customer Number used to register your account. All magazine/archive subscriptions purchased with this customer number will automatically appear in your account.

Using the drop-down menus beside the title(s) that you subscribe to, choose the volume and issue numbers and click on Open. You now have access to your magazine and any resources linked to it

Associated Subscriber
You will need to add the digital content for each new issue as you recieve it. Once you have logged in, you will see the following home page:


In the boxes at the top of the page, enter the access code and code word that appears on the back page of your magazine - see below.


 
Your new magazine will be added to your account straightaway.

What are the Browser Requirements to use Magazines Online?

Browsers supports: Internet Explorer 7 and 8, Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox. For best results, do not use Internet Explorer 6.

The site was designed for optimum viewing at 1024 x 768 pixels.

Minimum recommended broadband connection: 512 Kbps.

A PC with a 1.5 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM.

Flash is required to view the magazine pages; ensure that you have the latest version and updates.

 

Accessing your Magazines


How do I use my magazines online?

Text on screen
Once you have selected your magazine, click on the cover, or on 'Open digital magazine' to open your magazine on the screen.

Zoom and Full screen
Use the scale - plus and minus buttons - to change the size of the section being viewed on screen.
Click on the full screen to automatically size the pages to full screen, so that you can read the text in better resolution.

Moving through the magazine
Use the arrows at the left - and right-hand page edges to move through your magazine.

Print
Clicking on the print button will print your article.

How do I search?
Simply use the search box at the top of the page. The search function allows you to search within a single title, or, if you subscribe to more than one title, across those titles.

How do I access the resources for my magazines?

All the resources that accompany each issue of the magazine is listed on the issue home page, you can also access these at any time by clicking the
Resources button whilst browsing through the digital magazine pages.

Why can't I open resources?

This is caused by issues with some (older) browsers. Simply alter your browser settings as follows:

  1. Click on Tools in the browser at the top
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. Select Security
  4. Select Internet
  5. Select Custom Level
  6. Scroll down to Downloads
  7. Click ENABLE radio button on Auto Prompting for File Downloads.

Online Archive


What is the Online Archive?

Can't find the article you remember reading?
The issue you need is missing from the library?
Want to search for articles on a certain topic?

Online archives of back issues are available for all our A-level magazines which provide full access to the text of all articles. The Online archive dates as far back as 2004-05 (or to the first issues in the cases of A-level Law Review, PE Review and RS Review).

Photographs
The Online Archive provides full access to the text of all articles. Some photographs have been masked for copyright reasons. We are working with copyright owners to 'unmask' more photographs over time.

Where a photograph is referred to in the text and is required fpr direct analysis, it is included.

Purchasing the Online Archive grants unlimited access for all staff and students at home or at school.

How do I sign up for a Free Trial to the Online Archive?

You can sign up for a free 30 day trial to the Online Archive by logging into your account and selecting the Archive tab on the left hand side of the page and selecting Unlock next to the archive of your choice.

If you don't jhave a Magazines Online account, you can sign up to trial the Online Archive for any A-level Review magazine at http://magazinesonline.philipallan.co.uk.

Each institution can only take out a free trial once.

How do I give Archive access to my students?

Purchasing the Online Archive grants unlimited access for all your students at home or at school. To share your archive access with students:

Step 1
Log into your Institutional subscriber account at http://magazinesonline.philipallan.co.uk

Step 2
Select the Archive tab from the left hand menu

Step 3
This page will display all Archives that you have access to, click Share Archives with Students button

Step 4
Select the Magazine Archive which you would like to share from the drop down menu, all your archives will appear there

Step 5

ou can now add your students in any of the following ways:
 
    • You can add each e-mail address for each student in the text box manually and click Add Students  button
    • You can add one generic e-mail address for the archive, e.g. history@genericschool.net. This e-mail/username can be used by students at the same time.
    • You can upload a CSV (spreadseet) containing all of the student e-mails by clicking Browse beneath the text box, selecting the file from your computer, clicking open and then clicking Import CSV to complete the process.
 
Once you have performed one of the above, click Add Students. At this point, the e-mails you have entered are stored in our site. All students who have been added will recieve an e-mail informing them that they have access to the Archives and that they can enter at any time.

The students who are already registered with the site will appear at the bottom of the page in the section titles Students Added.

The students who are not registered with the site will not appear in the list below but their details are in the site. They will recieve an e-mail inviting them to register. Once the student has registered they will be able to access the Archive and their username will appear in the list at the bottom of the page.

For larger groups you will find it easier to upload a CSV file or use a generic e-mail address and password.


Creating a CSV file for student email addresses
List each e-mail address in an Excel spreadsheet, starting with cell A1 and working down. Do not include any headings, just the student email details. Use 'Save as' to save the file as a .csv file. Sve the file to your normal work area.

To upload the file from the screen above, click Import CSV and navigate to the file in your work area.

I have added students' email addresses, but can't see them listed under Archive Access

You will only see the email address of those who have already registered and set up their account for Magazines Online.

If you have given access to a student who is NOT registered, they will now recieve an email telling them that they have this access and giving details of how to register.


 


Do students have to be magazine subscribers to get Archive access?

No. You can give Archive access to any of your students and colleagues in the same school or college.

They do need to register by setting up an associated account with Magazines Online, however, to be able to access the archive.

Can I download material to my VLE?

The magazine Online Archives are web-based products that cannot be downloaded to and stored within a VLE. Thsi ensures that you have access to the most up-to-date version of the archive with added resources.

Can I share log-in details with a colleague in another school?

All subscriptions and log-in details are specific to individuals or to an individual educational institution and may not be shared.
